Construction Monitoring: Howard Street Housing

Western New York Veterans Housing Coalition, Inc. (WNYVHC) and Norstar Development USA, LP are completing work on 43 affordable apartments in the former 75 Schoolhouse on Howard Street and 18 new rental homes on vacant lots nearby. There will be four studios, 41 one-bedroom apartments and two two-bedroom apartments located in PS 75 and 14 two-bedroom and four three-bedroom houses.

The project will provide affordable housing opportunities for veteran and non-veteran households and individuals. PS 75 will also include approximately 2,700 square feet of space that will be occupied by WNYVHC and used as the organization’s new headquarters.

The project involves redeveloping PS 75, which closed as a public school in 1979. Since then the building has been used for a variety of purposes, but it sat vacant for over 20 years and fell into a advanced state of disrepair.

Rental homes are located on Howard Street, Monroe Street and Adams Street. Eighteen new houses are being built, including 17 two-story houses and one handicapped-accessible one-story house. Exterior features include fiber cement siding and trim, vinyl windows, front and back porches for outdoor seating, individual walkways located along the side of each structure, and rear yards. Stieglitz Snyder Architecture is the project architect and NK Star Construction, LLC is the general contractor.
