CALUMET TOWNSHIP – A resident found dead after a house fire early Sunday has been identified as a 55-year-old man, the Lake County coroner’s office said.

Duane Trosper died after returning to his burning house in the 1500 block of East Elm Street in Calumet Township, according to a statement from the coroner and firefighters.

Lake Ridge firefighters were dispatched to the house around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Fire Chief Mike Redd said.

Police officers, who were already at the scene, told firefighters a husband and wife left the house unharmed, but the husband went inside to retrieve a dog and his keys, Redd said .

The husband never returned from the house and firefighters found the body of a man in the basement after putting out the flames, he said.

This episode of the “Riding Shotgun with NWI Cops” series takes viewers around Munster in the middle of the holiday season.

The two-story house collapsed during the blaze and was demolished after the blaze, Redd said. The fire also melted the siding of a nearby garage and a neighboring house.

No firefighter was injured, Redd said.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is participating in the investigation.

Lake Ridge Firefighters were assisted by Griffith, Highland, Merrillville, Lake Hills and Gary Fire Departments.
