Middletown community reacts to woman accused of setting house on fire

A house was destroyed after a fire on Sunday night in Middletown. After completing an investigation, Manchester Fire officials said it was set up intentionally. Sunday evening, the house was engulfed in flames but the surrounding neighbors did not have significant damage. At around 11:30 p.m., Middletown police and firefighters arrived at the scene on Manchester Road. “I looked and all I saw was a bunch of oranges,” said next door neighbor Marcus Murray. Murray was awakened as his neighbor’s house burned down. “I was sleeping soundly in that room right there and my dad literally knocked on the door to wake me up.” Witnesses said the house was already very smoky. “I was like a holy cannoli. It was scary. I mean my dad is still a little shaken by it, I’m still a little shaken,” Murray said. The house where three men lived was declared a total loss. Damage was also done to the Murray home. “The siding is quite melted so luckily we contacted the owner so he knows about this house which is a total loss and then my house which was damaged,” he said. What the community is talking about is not the fire itself, but who allegedly started it. The Middletown Fire Marshal determined that the fire was started intentionally by Samantha Stevens. Stevens was charged with three counts of aggravated arson. His name is very familiar in the neighborhood. “Yeah, we know exactly who she is,” Murray said. Police are still investigating the reasons for the fire, but neighbors on and off camera said the house was a problem. “We never had any issues with whoever started the fire, but she was mostly in this cabin here where the fire started,” he said. “If this house falls apart, it would make me and my family super happy,” Murray said. The three men who lived in the house are currently being assisted by the American Red Cross.
