Looking for this week’s one The craziest cars found that I came across a creation that made me let go of my jaw and rub my eyes. Once I confirmed that my vision was working, I clicked on the ad and looked through the images. This 1999 Ford E-450 for sale started life as a box truck, but now it’s a big cabin that looks pretty comfortable.

Old utility vehicles are my favorite type of custom RV builds. They evoke the reuse of a vehicle that would otherwise have been scrapped and they give free rein to the creativity of the manufacturer. Some of them are box trucks that become campers that still looks like a box truck out. Others, like this 1999 Ford E-450, throw in the cargo box for something completely personalized.

According to the announcement, the vehicle was built by Carpenter Owl, a Bloomington, Indiana, company that makes tiny homes. It’s called Concert Car and would have served as both an auditorium and a small concert hall without the pandemic. The seller also calls it an RV and it is registered as such.

The bolted living space to the rear would be constructed from a mixture of wood and metal with sheep wool insulation in the floor, walls and ceiling:

The floor and ceiling box are framed with 2x6s and the walls with 2x4s. The walls were designed with a rainscreen system consisting of Blockit house siding, cedar purlins and poplar tongue and groove siding. The rafters were cut from 2×12 to create the curved ceiling and the vaulted roof. The roof is made of 12 gauge galvalume sheet metal laid on a 1/4 ” ply topped with a Grace’s Ice and Water Shield rubber membrane.

Its interior is a similar story with a variety of surfaces comprised of white pine, elm, maple, cedar, poplar and walnut. The gig car seems to have most of the necessities with a kitchenette equipped with a sink, stove, toaster oven, and refrigerator. It also has a bathroom with a bathtub and a composting toilet.

As a house or motorhome, there really isn’t much space to sleep. It has a mezzanine with a bed for two and that’s about it. The rest of the space is used for a living room and for the concert stage.

Ah yes, you can open the kitchen curtains and remove several planks from the loft to make a small concert stage with a capacity of 20 people. Concert Car was built in part so that artists could have small performances.

This platform is probably not a very good choice for travel across the country. If you’ve driven an old E-450 pickup truck, you know that this kind of vehicle sucks to drive too long. There’s a Ford Power Stroke 7.3-liter turbodiesel V8 under the hood, and fuel economy will be downright mid-teens, if not inferior. But for local camping trips or something to park on a lot for the summer?

It looks so comfortable. I saw myself snuggling up in one of those chairs reading a book, covered with a blanket.

The other downside is the price. For the asking price of $80,000 there are a multitude of other recreational vehicles or even small houses. You could grow old Coach Prévost, or that school bus with a fire pit on the roof. Still, it would be pretty cool to have this as something to spend the weekend.
